This booklet explains the terminology changes to the federal Divorce Act and the New Brunswick Family Law Act that came into force on March 1, 2021. The changes to these Acts replaced several terms with more child-focused terminology. The amendments also introduced new parenting terminology such as “parenting orders” and “decision-making responsibility”, replacing former legal terms like “custody” and “access”.
